Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 pound large shrimp, thawed, peeled, deveined, tail-on
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ cup hot honey (homemade or store-bought)
  • Parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Shrimp

  1. Marinate the Shrimp: In a medium bowl, add your cleaned shrimp. Pour the buttermilk over the shrimp, ensuring each shrimp is well-coated. Allow them to marinate for 15 minutes at room temperature.

Step 2: Create the Seasoned Coating

  1. Prepare the Flour Mixture: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix thoroughly.

Step 3: Coat the Shrimp

  1. Dredge the Shrimp: Remove one shrimp from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Coat it in the seasoned flour mixture. Repeat with the remaining shrimp.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

  1. Prepare for Frying: Add about 2 inches of vegetable oil to a large pot and heat to 350°F. Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the right temperature.

Step 5: Fry the Shrimp

  1. Fry the Shrimp in Batches: Carefully place the coated shrimp in the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding. Fry each batch for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.

Step 6: Add Hot Honey and Garnish

  1. Coat with Hot Honey: Place the fried shrimp on a lined baking sheet. Drizzle hot honey over the shrimp and garnish with chopped parsley.

Helpful Tip: To keep the shrimp crispy while frying in batches, reheat the oil to 350°F between batches.

Notes

  • Fresh Ingredients: Use fresh shrimp for the best flavor and texture.
  • Hot Honey Varieties: Experiment with store-bought or homemade hot honey varieties to change the sweetness or spice level.
  • Batch Frying Tips: Fry in small batches to prevent temperature drops in the oil.
