Ingredients

Scale

Garlic Pizza Sauce Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1¼ cups whole milk
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped (or 3 tsp jarred minced garlic)
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated

Pizza Ingredients:

  • 1 homemade or store-bought pizza crust
  • 8 oz low-moisture mozzarella cheese, grated
  • ½ cup garlic pizza sauce (recipe above)
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Garnish:

  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chiffonade

Optional Substitutions:

  • Use plant-based butter and milk for a dairy-free version.
  • For a gluten-free pizza, opt for gluten-free flour and crust.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Garlic Pizza Sauce

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Whisk in the flour and continue whisking for 2 minutes, ensuring not to brown the mixture.
  3. Slowly add the milk while whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth, thick, and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the sea salt, black pepper, and garlic, and whisk to combine.
  5. Stir in the parmesan cheese and whisk until just melted.
  6. Remove from heat and allow to cool before using. This sauce can be refrigerated for up to 5 days.

Step 2: Prepare the Pizza

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Roll out your pizza crust on a 12-14″ pizza pan.
  3. Brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning for an added herb flavor.
  4. Spread the garlic sauce evenly across the pizza crust.
  5. Top with mozzarella and parmesan cheeses.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated parmesan: Pre-grated cheese often has additives that prevent it from melting as smoothly.
  • For extra garlic flavor: Add an additional clove of garlic to the sauce or sprinkle roasted garlic on top before baking.
  • Keep the crust crisp: Baking the crust for 3-4 minutes before adding the toppings helps prevent sogginess.
