Description

Welcome to our latest culinary journey, where elegance meets ease with this Smoked Salmon Canapés recipe. Whether you’re hosting a sophisticated gathering or need a quick yet impressive appetizer, these bite-sized delights are perfect for any occasion. In just 15 minutes, you’ll create a plate full of flavor with smoked salmon, fresh dill, and cream cheese, all layered on crispy toasted rye squares. Let’s dive in!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 23 pieces thin-sliced rye bread
  • 3 tablespoons minced red onion (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh dill, plus additional dill sprigs for garnish
  • 4 ounces (113 g) cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 23 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 ounces (113 g) smoked salmon

Optional Substitutions:

  • Rye bread: Gluten-free bread can be substituted for dietary restrictions.
  • Cream cheese: Swap for dairy-free cream cheese if needed.
  • Smoked salmon: Use smoked trout for a different flavor profile.

Instructions

Step 1: Toast the Bread

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Slice your rye bread into 1 ½ inch squares, removing the crusts if desired. Arrange them on a baking tray and toast for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Mixture

In a small bowl, mash the room-temperature cream cheese until smooth. Mix in the minced dill, two tablespoons of red onion, and lemon juice. Add salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning to your liking by adding more lemon juice or dill.

Step 3: Assemble the Canapés

Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly on the toasted bread squares. Tear small strips of smoked salmon, rolling them into rose shapes, and place one on each square. Garnish with the reserved red onion and a sprig of dill.

Notes

  • Use fresh ingredients: Opt for fresh dill and lemon for a more vibrant flavor.
  • Prepping ahead: You can prepare the cream cheese mixture up to two days in advance. Store it in the fridge, and assemble the canapés just before serving.
  • Customization: Feel free to experiment with different herbs, or add a touch of horseradish to the cream cheese for an extra kick.
