Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (16-ounce) package of ziti pasta, uncooked
- 1 (24-ounce) jar of marinara sauce – use your favorite!
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup water
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Optional: Add browned Italian sausage or ground beef for extra flavor.
Instructions
- Prepare the Cheese Mixture
In a large bowl, mix ricotta, half of the mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, egg, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper until well combined. If you prefer a heartier dish, add browned sausage or beef at this stage. - Layer Ingredients in the Slow Cooker
- Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Add a layer of uncooked ziti pasta on top.
- Spoon half of the cheese mixture over the pasta, then top with a layer of sauce.
- Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of sauce on top.
- Add Water for Even Cooking
Pour the water around the edges of the slow cooker, which will help the pasta cook evenly without drying out. - Cook on Low
Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours or until the pasta is tender. - Final Cheese Topping
In the last 30 minutes of cooking, sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top and let it melt. - Let Rest and Serve
Let the ziti rest for 10 minutes to set. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired and serve warm.
Notes
- Choose Fresh Ingredients: Fresh garlic, herbs, and quality marinara sauce elevate the flavors.
- Layer Carefully: Ensure each layer has enough sauce to prevent dry pasta.
- Opt for Low-Temperature Cooking: Cooking on low prevents overcooked pasta.
