Ingredients
- 2 bell peppers, cut into strips
- 1 yellow onion, sliced into ½-inch slices
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- Black pepper, to taste
- 6 Italian sausages (hot or sweet), about 1 pound
- 6 hoagie rolls
- 1 ½ cups mozzarella, shredded
- Chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)
Optional Substitutions:
- Gluten-free rolls for those with gluten sensitivity.
- Vegan sausages and dairy-free cheese for a plant-based option.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables
Preheat your oven to 425°F. On a large sheet pan, add the bell peppers and onions. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Toss everything to coat evenly.
Step 2: Cook the Sausages and Vegetables
Nestle the sausage links into the vegetables on the sheet pan. Bake for about 25 minutes or until the sausages are fully cooked and the vegetables are tender.
Step 3: Assemble the Sandwiches
Once the sausages are done, load your hoagie rolls with the sausages and the pepper-onion mixture. Place the filled hoagie rolls on a clean sheet pan and sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top.
Step 4: Broil to Melt the Cheese
Turn on the broiler. Broil the sandwiches for 2-4 minutes until the cheese is melted and the buns are toasted on top. Be sure to watch closely to prevent burning.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, and serve hot!
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh bell peppers and onions will provide the best flavor.
- Choose Your Favorite Sausage: You can use sweet, spicy, or a mix of both sausages to customize the flavor of your sandwich.
- Make It Your Own: Add toppings like sautéed mushrooms or spicy marinara sauce for an extra layer of flavor.
