Description

Hello, and welcome to this savory and authentic Pico de Gallo recipe! If you’re looking for a fresh and vibrant Mexican salsa that bursts with flavor, you’ve come to the right place. This Pico de Gallo, also known as salsa fresca, is a must-try for anyone who loves traditional Mexican cuisine. Whether you’re serving it with tacos, nachos, or fajitas, this salsa is sure to elevate any dish with its bold, fresh taste.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 pound of tomatoes, chopped (5 medium / 3 large)
  • 1 cup of white onion, chopped
  • 2 jalapeño peppers, seeded and finely chopped
  • ½ cup of cilantro, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup of lime juice (from 1 lime)
  • 2 teaspoons of coarse salt

Optional substitutions:

  • For a milder version, replace jalapeño with bell peppers.
  • For a tangy twist, use lemon juice instead of lime juice.
  • If you’re allergic to cilantro, you can substitute with parsley for a different but still fresh flavor.

Instructions

Step 1: Chop the Vegetables

Start by chopping the tomatoes and onions into small, even pieces. Add them to a medium-sized serving bowl.

Step 2: Prepare the Jalapeños and Cilantro

Finely chop the jalapeño peppers and cilantro. If you prefer less heat, remove the seeds from the jalapeños. Add these ingredients to the bowl with the tomatoes and onions.

Step 3: Add Lime Juice and Salt

Pour in the lime juice and sprinkle the salt over the chopped ingredients. Stir everything together until it’s well combined.

Step 4: Taste and Adjust

Taste your Pico de Gallo and adjust the seasoning as needed. You can add more lime juice for extra tang or more salt to enhance the flavors.

Step 5: Let the Flavors Marinate

For the best results, let the salsa rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together. Overnight is even better.

Notes

  • Freshness is Key: Always use fresh, ripe tomatoes for the best flavor. Overripe or mushy tomatoes can make the salsa watery.
  • Control the Heat: Adjust the heat level by adding or reducing the amount of jalapeño. If you like it extra spicy, leave some seeds in.
  • Perfect Balance: Lime juice is essential in balancing the acidity of the tomatoes and the heat from the jalapeño. Don’t skip it!
