Description

This old-fashioned peach cobbler is a Southern classic made with fresh peaches, a buttery batter, and a spiced golden crust. It’s easy to make, ready in an hour, and perfect for summer gatherings or cozy desserts at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (remaining)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sliced peaches, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, lemon juice, and optional cornstarch. Cook for 5–7 minutes until peaches soften and sugars dissolve. Remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour melted butter into the prepared baking dish. Pour batter over the butter without stirring.
  5. Spoon peach mixture evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
  6. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and nutmeg.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end for extra crispiness, if desired.
  8. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Don’t stir the layers—this creates the cobbler’s signature texture.
  • Use fresh, ripe peaches for best flavor, but frozen or canned can be substituted.
  • Add chopped nuts or coarse sugar to the top for added crunch.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for serving.
