Description
This old-fashioned peach cobbler is a Southern classic made with fresh peaches, a buttery batter, and a spiced golden crust. It’s easy to make, ready in an hour, and perfect for summer gatherings or cozy desserts at home.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (remaining)
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sliced peaches, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, lemon juice, and optional cornstarch. Cook for 5–7 minutes until peaches soften and sugars dissolve. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour melted butter into the prepared baking dish. Pour batter over the butter without stirring.
- Spoon peach mixture evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
- Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end for extra crispiness, if desired.
- Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Don’t stir the layers—this creates the cobbler’s signature texture.
- Use fresh, ripe peaches for best flavor, but frozen or canned can be substituted.
- Add chopped nuts or coarse sugar to the top for added crunch.
- Can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for serving.
