Welcome, taco lovers! If you’re a fan of the famous Chicken Wonton Tacos at Applebee’s, then you’re in for a treat. Today, I’m excited to share a detailed guide on how to make Chicken Wonton Tacos right in your kitchen. This homemade version captures the perfect balance of flavor, crunch, and freshness, making it a must-try dish for every taco enthusiast.
Ingredients
Scale
⅓ head of red cabbage (thinly sliced and chopped)
4 small carrots (peeled and grated)
¼ cup coleslaw dressing
¼ cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1 pound ground chicken
¼ cup stir-fry sauce (store-bought or homemade)
14 wonton wrappers
Optional Add-ons:
Chopped cilantro, red or sweet onions, and lime wedges for serving.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Slaw
Mix together the cabbage, carrots, coleslaw dressing, vinegar, soy sauce, and teriyaki sauce in a large bowl until well combined.
Pro Tip: For enhanced flavor, refrigerate the slaw for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Step 2: Cook the Chicken
Preheat a large skillet over medium heat and add sesame oil.
Add the ground chicken and cook until browned and crumbly (approximately 5-7 minutes).
Pour in the stir-fry sauce, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer.
Step 3: Shape the Wonton Wrappers
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Form each wonton wrapper into a taco shape and place it between the cups of an inverted muffin tin.
Step 4: Bake the Wonton Shells
Bake in the oven for 4-5 minutes until firm and lightly browned.
Step 5: Assemble the Tacos
Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of the chicken mixture into each wonton shell.
Top with the prepared slaw, and serve with lime wedges and cilantro.
Notes
Chill the Slaw: Let the slaw chill for at least an hour for a more pronounced flavor.
Prevent Sogginess: Add the chicken filling right before serving to keep the wonton shells crispy.
Use Fresh Ingredients: Freshly shredded cabbage and carrots add a great crunch to the tacos.
