Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into thick patties.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties and onion in the oil until the patties are well browned.
  • Remove the meat patties and keep them warm on a plate.
  • Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in the flour with a fork, scraping up meat bits from the bottom.
  • Gradually mix in the beef broth. Season with salt. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  • Reduce heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.

Notes

  • When forming the hamburger patties, try to make them an even thickness to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • To make the patties even juicier, avoid overworking the meat mixture. Handle it gently when forming the patties.
  • If you find that the gravy becomes too thick, you can always add a little more beef broth to loosen it up. This will give you the perfect consistency for pouring over mashed potatoes or other side dishes.
