Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella sticks (string cheese)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 cups Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, crushed into fine crumbs
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Vegetable oil for frying
Substitution tips: For gluten-free options, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs. You can swap cheddar for pepper jack cheese for added spice.
Instructions
Step 1: Freeze the Mozzarella Sticks
Place the mozzarella sticks in the freezer for at least an hour. This step prevents the cheese from melting too quickly during frying.
Step 2: Prepare the Coating Stations
Set up three bowls:
- All-purpose flour in the first.
- Whisked eggs and milk in the second.
- Crushed Flamin’ Hot Cheetos mixed with panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, and smoked paprika in the third.
Step 3: Stuff with Cheddar Cheese
Cut a small slit in each mozzarella stick and carefully stuff with shredded cheddar. Pinch the slit to seal the cheese inside.
Step 4: Coat the Mozzarella Sticks
Coat each stick in flour, dip it in the egg mixture, and roll it in the Cheetos mixture. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and crumb coating.
Step 5: Heat the Oil
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.
Step 6: Fry Until Golden
Fry 2–3 sticks at a time for 2–3 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
