Let’s get started on this delicious journey!
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 8 slices of rye bread
- 8 slices of Swiss cheese
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tbsp butter, plus more for spreading
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Secret Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp relish
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set the sauce aside while you prepare the rest of the melt.
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Once caramelized, transfer them to a plate and set aside.
- Form the Beef Patties: Take your ground beef and divide it into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty, making sure the patties are slightly larger than the bread slices, as they will shrink during cooking. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, cook the patties to your desired doneness – about 4 minutes per side for medium. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Take your rye bread and butter one side of each slice. On the non-buttered side, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce. Add a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, a layer of caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top it with another slice of bread (buttered side facing up).
- Grill the Patty Melts: In a clean skillet over medium heat, grill each sandwich until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted. This should take about 3-4 minutes per side. Be careful not to burn the bread while ensuring the cheese melts perfectly.

- Don’t rush the onions: Caramelizing onions takes time, so be patient. Cooking them slowly over medium heat allows them to develop a sweet, rich flavor that complements the savory beef and cheese.
- Choose good-quality bread: Rye bread is traditional for patty melts, but you can substitute it with sourdough or another hearty bread. Just make sure the bread is thick enough to hold all the delicious fillings.
- Customizable options: If you prefer a spicier kick, consider adding a bit of sriracha or hot sauce to the secret sauce.
