Ingredients
For the Cookies:
- 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (255g)
- 1¼ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (150g)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (113g)
- 1 tablespoon orange zest (about 2 oranges)
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup fresh orange juice (120ml)
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar (120g)
- Zest of 1/2 orange
- 1 to 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat Your Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This will ensure the cookies bake evenly and rise properly.
- Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the granulated sugar, butter, and orange zest. Mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is crucial for giving the cookies their soft texture.
- Add the Egg: Crack in the egg and continue beating until fully combined. The mixture should be smooth at this point.
- Incorporate the Dry Ingredients and Orange Juice: With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour mixture, alternating with the fresh orange juice. Continue mixing until everything is just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the cookies dense.
- Shape the Cookies: Use a tablespoon or cookie scoop to form balls of dough, placing them about 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. This spacing ensures they have room to spread while baking.
- Bake the Cookies: Bake one sheet at a time for 10 minutes, or until the centers of the cookies appear dry and the edges are firm. Once baked, let them cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the Glaze: While the cookies cool, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, orange zest, orange juice, and melted butter in a small bowl. The glaze should be smooth and easy to spread.
- Glaze the Cookies: Once the cookies are cool, spread a small amount of glaze over each one. Let them sit for about 20 minutes until the glaze is fully set. Enjoy!

- Enhance the Orange Flavor: For a stronger citrus flavor, rub the orange zest into the sugar before creaming it with the butter. This releases more of the natural oils from the zest.
- Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure your butter and egg are at room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother dough.
- Avoid Overbaking: The cookies should be slightly soft in the center when you take them out of the oven. They’ll continue to set as they cool.
