Ingredients

Scale

Bread:

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

Sloppy Joe:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup yellow onion, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Topping:

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Step1: Prepare the Bread

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the Italian bread lengthwise into two halves and place them cut-side up on the baking sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic salt. Spread the mixture evenly over the bread halves. Set them aside.

Step2: Cook the Sloppy Joe Filling

  1. In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onions until the beef is browned and cooked through (approximately 8–10 minutes). Drain any excess grease.
  2. Add garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water. Stir until everything is combined. Let the mixture simmer for 2–3 minutes.

Step3: Assemble and Bake

  1. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly onto the prepared bread halves.
  2. Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 12–14 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Remove the bread from the oven and garnish with chopped parsley.
  2. Slice into pieces and serve warm.

Enjoy your cheesy, garlicky creation!

Notes

  • Use fresh, bakery-style bread for the best texture and flavor.
  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a healthier or vegetarian option.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to the filling.
